ELECTROCHLORINATION UPGRADE IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY

WestWater (a Centurion company) replaced chlorine gas systems across multiple sites for a client in the Northern Territory with Hyprolyser® Electrochlorination technology. The upgrades improved safety, reduced risks, and ensured compliant, reliable disinfection for water and wastewater facilities in the Northern Territory.


The Client

A client operating water treatment facilities in Nhulunbuy, Northern Territory, sought to improve safety, compliance, and operational efficiency by moving away from chlorine gas as the disinfection agent.

Client Challenges

The client needed to:

  • Eliminate risks associated with chlorine gas, including supply, storage, handling, and maintenance
  • Align with Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG) and their own internal standards for potable water disinfection
  • Upgrade multiple facilities across the region to ensure safe and compliant operations.

Our Solutions

Over two and a half years, WestWater (a Centurion company) delivered comprehensive upgrades by installing new Hyprolyser® Electrochlorination systems at multiple sites. These systems generate sodium hypochlorite on-site using salt and water, replacing the need for chlorine gas.

Key project elements included:

  • South Town water treatment plan – replacement of dual 920kg chlorine gas drum system with a 1,100g/hr Hyprolyser® Electrochlorination system, retrofitted into the existing chlorination building
  • South Pumping Station – replacement of dual 920kg chlorine gas drum system with a 560g/hr Hyprolyser® Electrochlorination system, also retrofitted into the existing building
  • Sewage Treatment Plant – replacement of dual 70kg chlorine gas cylinder system with a 270g/hr containerised Hyprolyser® Electrochlorination facility
  • Mine Supply Pump Station – replacement of dual 70kg chlorine gas cylinder system with a 270g/hr containerised facility
  • Nhulunbuy Aquatic Centre – replacement of dual 920kg chlorine gas drum system with a 1,100g/hr Hyprolyser® Electrochlorination system, housed in a transportable module.

Results

  • Eliminated the use of chlorine gas across multiple facilities, improving safety for personnel and reducing operational risk
  • Delivered fully compliant disinfection systems that meet ADWG and client standards
  • Enabled safer storage, reduced handling requirements, and simplified long-term maintenance
  • Provided tailored solutions across a diverse mix of facilities, from WTPs to aquatic centres.
